If we could get enough people to boycott the repair shops and dealers this would change

A dealership charging $200/hr then paying their mechanics $25 is a problem.

Customer: “why is the fan clutch not coming off my problem, do you not have the proper tools to do it? I’m not paying additional labor or parts because of your incompetence”. I agree with you, but this is actual conversations that happen with some customers. And instead of losing the whole job you just eat it and move on. And don’t get me started on warranty.

well said. a good service advisor will always make sure to get the tech the time required. Some younger less experienced writers are afraid to get that extra time from the customer.

The problem with Flat Rate is its abused by poorly managed shops and the system fails the tech. As you said, if it requires more time, the customer should be advised, and the time should be approved. The system fails when advisors won't sell the time, or managers don't support paying the additional time, Manufa turers short the time(warranty), or there's parts shortages, incorrect parts, or any other delay. When the system breaks down, the technician eats it every time.

you just dont work for dealerships. go become a heavy equipment or semi mechanic for a fleet and get paid hourly. especially here in the rust belt because nothing comes apart like they tell you it should.

Flat rate itself isn’t the problem. Flat rate abuse from manufacturers and poor managers is the problem. I’ve worked at two really good shops that understand flat rate and how it treat techs properly. Every shop that I’ve seen that has excessive turnover has crappy management or poor training/hiring practices. The days of hiring warm bodies to replace water pumps and brakes died a long time ago and some shops are still stuck in the past.

I disagree I just did a rack on a 2017 ford explorer. 6 of the 8 exhaust bolts broke. Was communicated and I was not paid for 4 extra hours of work to drill and extract these bolts. Still made over 100 hours but not the point I lost my ass for being thorough and completing the repair properly

It's a double-edged sword. The best situation I ever had was working at an independent shop making $35/hr flat rate and their labor rate was $70/hr. This was 18 years ago. Making half of the shop labor rate was fantastic for everyone and I wish this was the norm for everyone.

As an Aircraft Mechanic if I’m sitting in a chair or turning wrenches I’m making $76 an hour regardless

Unfortunately there are a lot of LAZY service advisors that don't want to do there job which ends up costing the Technician. The Stealership charges close to $275 +an hour and pays the Tech at a minimal rate which compounds the problem. Nobody there to to support the Tech
