basically you can’t be closer to the goal than any of the other team’s defenders when the ball is passed to you. it’s to prevent people from camping by the goal the whole game.

If there is a offensive player (team with the ball) beyond the last defensive player (excluding the goalie) when the ball is passed, they're offsides.
