A lot of academics don’t enjoy being on camera and don’t want to be on camera too.

Some academics will take to the online world like ducks to water, but for those who have resistance, should they be forced to interact, if it doesn’t come naturally? I remember when this expectation was set for us at my university; at the time, we were “the most connected” school in the world, and we were all expected (but not specifically paid) to produce online content. Some of those early websites were available for years and years. But not everyone wanted to participate. Even now, I suspect there will inevitably be “stars” and those who resist. Putting yourself before the public comes with all sorts of problems. Not everyone wants to deal with the hassles. It’s only one medium to use to educate, after all.

I would say yes! especially for those who cannot attend college or university for a variety of reasons and who cannot access online courses for their own reasons. the more people learn, the better and you do wonderful content!

If you like social media videos and making science accessible to the public, you should check out the work of professor Sara Uckelman from the University of Durham. She's a Professor of Logic at their philosophy department, and a dear friend of mine. She held a lecture about her social media work and how it relates to the Swedish SweDigArch digital archaeology project, at the University of Umeå.

the point about marginalised groups is so important. Just like with open science, the risks are not the same for everyone
