Jali Foday Musa Suso, widely known as Joka Jalo, was one of The Gambia’s most celebrated Mandinka kora masters and griots. Born on 18 February 1950, he dedicated his life to the kora, Mandinka oral tradition and the preservation of Gambian culture. He took the 21-string kora to international audiences and collaborated with renowned musicians including Herbie Hancock, Philip Glass and the Kronos Quartet. Through his music, he showed the world the richness and beauty of Gambian and Mandinka culture. Foday Musa Suso passed away on 25 May 2025, aged 75. His legacy lives on through his music, his family, his students and the many people he inspired. As Gambians, we should celebrate Jali Foday Musa Suso by honouring his music, teaching our children about his contribution, supporting kora players and keeping Mandinka musical traditions alive. His achievements should be remembered in our schools, cultural institutions and national celebrations. Let us not allow the knowledge and music he dedicated his life to disappear. We should celebrate him, preserve his legacy and continue to pass his music and cultural values from one generation to the next.
