Here's my only thing. People in an accident aren't criminals either but police need their info for reports and to report to insurance and give tickets, if necessary. So the committing a crime thing is not always the case. If the victim or the person who was hit or didn't get the ticket needs his info to present to whomever to file with insurance, etc. then just help instead of hinder. I've lived 55 years and give my license to a police officer whenever asked and I'm still plugging along with no issues. In my view, I see nothing wrong with giving your license if you've done nothing wrong and have nothing to hide. Hiding identity, to me, seems suspicious. That's what criminals do, deceive and hide and lie. I know you don't have to if you don't want to but don't act surprised when this happens.
