@scholadaily: Who wrote the first ever proof? A mathematical proof is a deductive argument for a mathematical statement, showing that the stated assumptions logically guarantee the conclusion. The argument may use other previously established statements, such as theorems; but every proof can, in principle, be constructed using only certain basic or original assumptions known as axioms, along with the accepted rules of inference. Proofs are examples of exhaustive deductive reasoning that establish logical certainty, to be distinguished from empirical arguments or non-exhaustive inductive reasoning that establish "reasonable expectation" Historians generally attribute the first mathematical proofs to Thales of Miletus (c. 624–546 BCE). He is credited with introducing logical, deductive reasoning to geometry, moving mathematics away from mere empirical rules. However, because no original manuscripts of Thales survive, the first recorded proof we actually have on paper comes from the philosopher Plato (c. 428–348 BCE). In his dialogue Meno, Socrates questions an uneducated servant, logically guiding him through a geometric proof to demonstrate how to construct a square with double the area of a given square.Later, around 300 BCE, Euclid revolutionized the field by systematically organizing these concepts into a formal axiomatic system in his treatise Elements.
