@eelosx: Anarcho-capitalism (colloquially: ANCAP, Ancap, AnCap, or An-Cap) is a political ideology and economic theory that advocates for the abolition of state monopolies and promotes their replacement with private providers.[2] Proponents argue that a society could function without a centralized state through voluntary exchange and private institutions that provide legal and security services, relegating coercionto the collection of tort damages, and refining recoupment in the context of a free and open marketplace[3]. This model envisions a voluntary society.[4][5][6] Proponents rely heavily on the non-aggression principle to argue that essential public services—including policing, courts, and defense—can be effectively replaced by competing private defense agencies, subrogation markets, and insurance providers. This synthesis of anti-statism and private property remains deeply controversial among anarchists in general, which overwhelmingly reject anarcho-capitalism, arguing that things which anarcho-capitalists advocate, namely private land ownership and law and contract enforcement are inherently hierarchical and governmentalist, and therefore incompatible with true anarchism.[7] While the earliest documented use of the term anarcho-capitalism appears in Karl Hess's essay, "The Death of Politics", published in Playboy in March 1969,[8][9] the American economist Murray Rothbard largely developed and popularized the concepts of anarcho-capitalists[10][11] and anarcho-capitalism in the early 1970s.[12] Rothbard, an American libertarian,[13] drew on elements of the Austrian school of economics, Ayn Rand's Objectivism, classical liberalism, and 19th-century American individualist anarchistthinkers Lysander Spooner and Benjamin Tucker. However, he rejected the individualist anarchist labor theory of value, opposition to non-usufructproperty, lack of support for constitutional law and private courts, their economic theories (especially support for mutual credit, land banking, opposition to usury, rent and wage system), views on justice system (such as support for jury nullification), and their opposition to absolute land ownership, including the right of landowners to set rules on their land.[14][15][16][17][18] Rothbard proposed that an anarcho-capitalist society would operate under a mutually agreed-upon legal code, which he suggested would be generally accepted and adhered to by courts.[19]This legal code would recognize contracts between individuals, private property, self-ownership, and tort law in accordance with the non-aggression principle.[13][19][20] Unlike a state system, enforcement in Rothbard's model would apply only to those who initiated force or fraud.[21] Rothbard argued that state power is unjustified, asserting that it violates individual rights, reduces prosperity, and creates social and economic problems.[13] Proponents of anarcho-capitalism cite several historical precedents that they regard as examples of quasi-anarcho-capitalism,[a]including the Republic of Cospaia,[26] Acadia,[27]Anglo-Saxon England,[28][4] Medieval Iceland, the American Old West,[27] Gaelic Ireland,[13] as well as systems such as merchant law, admiralty law, and early common law.
