I just finally learned this same thing! Only took 50 years to understand I deserve love just for being me. Period.

My therapist told me me, “Love isn’t a prize.” It’s hard to find relationships with good people when you’re so consumed with making them happy in order to gain their love. Meanwhile, we don’t receive the same in return and why would we, we showed them that this is okay. Then, if we were to get love we would feel like we have to reciprocate every little thing and can’t just accept it. It’s exhausting lol.

I feel like you're describing me. I'll be 60 this year. I was the middle child, only daughter sandwiched between two boys that my mother adored. My mother was an only child born in 1936 to a single mother. My father, my great uncle, and one of her favorite cousins were all completely over the moon with me at my birth. Looking back after all these years, I think maybe she was a little bit jealous of that baby? She was never outwardly mean or abusive in any way whatsoever to me. But it was always the little things. No matter what the situation was, an argument with one of my brothers over a toy, a falling out with friends, break up in high school with my boyfriend. Each and every one of those incidents caused my mother to say to me "what did you do? What did you say to them?" there was never any comfort for a broken heart or commiseration if I was sad because I fought with my friends. It was always accusation and blame and telling me that I was at fault somehow. I've had two failed marriages and was recently in a relationship that lasted 18 months before it soured. Now, in the last chapter of my life, I'm trying to teach myself that I am also deserving of love. It's a hard thing to learn.

“Love has just become another job.” 😳 This has me shook because now I’m thinking that’s why I’ve been single for so long. I don’t want that “job.” And I have contributed to that because I do what you just highlighted. My goodness what a powerful insight!! Thank you.
