I think you're missing why people think it's corny. If she showed her ability to Metalbend and then just said, "I am Toph Beifong!" it'd hit much harder than her literally stating the immediately obvious.

Everything you said would have been captured with the original lines “I’m the greatest earth bender”, while “I invented.. “ is just corny .. imagine goku getting super Saiyin 2 (first to ever do it) .. saying “I’m Goku and I’m the strongest” kinda cool.. vs “I’m Goku and I just invented super sayin 2” .. kinda corny

My biggest issue is that she says "I invented metal bending" just switching it out for "and I'm the greatest earth bender in the world" feels less corny but idk. I agree that the context is amazing

that scene did not feel as deep as the animation, considering how much we followed her through up to that point. the netflix live action made it seem like we've been keeping up with her and her earthbending journey for a while (poorly executed btw).

The whole "I invented metal bending" just sounds so off. And it just seems so random that she just discovers metal bending with no reason for it. If we compare it to the original, before she starts to try it she doesn't just automatically think "hey let's try and bend this metal cage" more than likely she wouldn't have even attempted to bend it if they hadn't taunted her in the first place by saying "you make think you're the greatest earth benders in the world, but even you can't bend metal" this then opens up the challenge for her to prove that she truly is the greatest earth bender in the world and she has to rally look deep into herself and her skills and search for the smallest fragments of earth to connect with and then by making the smallest indent is she able to fully bend the metal. And when they hear her break out and check, she traps them and proclaims that she is the greatest earth bender in the world and that she was able to really prove it to them. In the live action she just puts her hands on the cage and starts bending it with no real attempt or any real prompt to try and bend it. I feel like the scene would have been a little better if she states her name which is ok, probably doesn't need to shout it though, more of a statement as in "I'm Toph Beifong" but instead of saying "AND I INVENTED METAL BENDING" she says " I'm Toph Beifong, and I am the greatest earth bender in the world" I believe that line makes her seem truly more powerful, because her parents would have seen she was an earth bender but still not believe she is that great, but by then bending metal and stating she truly is the strongest bender puts more meaning into it
