On August 7, 1974, French high-wire artist Philippe Petit carried out one of the most daring stunts in history. At just 24 years old, he illegally walked across a steel cable stretched between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, nearly 1,300 feet above the ground. The plan took about six years to prepare. The night before, Petit and his accomplices secretly entered the buildings and spent hours installing the cable between the two towers. The following morning, with no safety net or protective equipment, he began the crossing carrying only a long balancing pole. For approximately 45 minutes, Petit crossed the gap eight times. He walked, knelt down, waved to the people watching from below, and even lay down on the cable. When he finally stepped off the wire, he was immediately taken into police custody. The charges were later dropped after he agreed to perform a free show for children in Central Park. The walk became known as the “artistic crime of the century” and turned Philippe Petit into a high-wire legend.
