@samuelszuchan: In Korea, mandatory retirement hits at age sixty. What happens after that is the booth. For Koreans aged 66 and older, the relative income poverty rate in 2023 was 39.8 percent. That's the highest of any OECD country. For Koreans 76 and older, it climbs to 52 percent, meaning more than one in two lives in poverty by the OECD's relative measure. So after decades of careers, often white-collar, the work available is taxi driving, convenience store shifts, small mom-and-pop ventures, and the apartment guard booth. About eighty percent of urban Koreans live in walled complexes called danji, and these complexes need someone to sit in the glass box at the gate. The booth's labor pool draws from a wide background. Former managers, former drivers, former teachers. What it filters for is not a résumé but a condition: age, and the absence of other options. The man in the booth used to manage a department at a manufacturing firm. The residents don't know his name. They haven't asked. The pattern has started shifting. The number of guards in their 30s and 40s rose 15.1 percent in 2023 to about 40,000, as premium complexes increasingly specify younger workers in their contracts. But that shift is just reorganizing who is available to absorb the abuse. The booth is where Korea's pension policy, its housing policy, its labor classifications, and its status anxieties all meet a single human being. And that human being has a three-month contract.
