Ezana: The King Who Changed Aksum More than 1,600 years ago, an African king ruled one of the most powerful states in the Red Sea world. His name was Ezana, king of Aksum. Aksum was centered in what is now northern Ethiopia and Eritrea, in a location that connected Africa with Arabia, the Mediterranean world, and the Indian Ocean trade network. But Ezana's inscriptions are especially important because they preserve evidence of a dramatic religious change. Earlier Aksumite rulers honored traditional gods. During Ezana's reign, however, Christian language and symbols increasingly appear in royal inscriptions. Ezana became one of the earliest known rulers in sub-Saharan Africa to publicly embrace Christianity, helping establish a religious tradition that would become deeply connected to Ethiopian history.
