i’m struggling to understand how the existence of homonyms contributes to that 2 out of 10 number. we have homonyms in english (e.g., park, letter, point), including some with potentially opposite meanings (e.g., cleave, oversight). but context helps us understand which meaning to go with, even without an equivalent of hanja. like in the debate example, shouldn’t it be clear that they mean hair since debating a “two feet” restriction wouldn’t make sense?

this is one of the reasons Japan didn’t completely remove Kanji/Hanja/Hanzi/Chinese Characters: they could just write everything in Hiragana and Katakana, but there will be confusing(and it’ll take up space but that’s besides the point).

You don't need Hanja. You could just add diacritics to differentiate similar words. For example, French differentiates "ou" (or) from "où" (where) with an accent, but the pronunciation is fundamentally the same. Or, alternatively, do like Japanese furikanji and add a semantic hint (using Hanja) above the word whenever it's likely to create confusion or be unclear to readers.

I'm confused, how would knowing hanja help understand the meaning of words in a text written in hangul? Knowing there are hononyms for words helps a little, but knowing hanja? In my language we have a lot of hononyms so people just learn to guess based on the broad context and the sentence structure. It's mostly a writer's job to make sure to give enough context so the words can be interpreted correctly.

as a foreigner who's learning Korean for a year and studying at a Korean uni hanja has helped me improve my Korean A LOT!! and the advantage for a Korean learner is that you don't even have to memorize the stroke orders and stuff too imo.

I discovered Hanja last year and IMMEDIATELY wandered why it wasn't included in any of my study materials. Learning 학 means different forms of education helped me immediately guess a word.

In other languages when there is a pair of ambiguous homophones, one or both of the words just naturally fall out of use in favor of unambiguous synonyms. That’s probably what should happen here.

Studying kanji for Japanese ultimately helped me remember words in Korean, and as a language student I can read Japanese with kanji a lot easier than Hangul, so yeah Hanja are really helpful!

In 2000 I saw hanja everywhere a d as a foreigner enjoyed learning it as a gateway to CJK commonality. I feel Hangul only is nationalistic and limits the understanding of nuances. It is also a cut off to the past. I do think the amount of hanja need not be excessive.

What about adding an optional symbol next to the hangul word/phrase? Like in the examples you gave: 수¹ 수² 수³ 수⁴ and 두발¹ 두발². The numbers are just placeholders, contextual symbols would work much better. Imo a simple system like hangul shouldn't be bound to an extremely complicated system of old chinese characters but should be improved in it's own way.

Absolutely 0 need to use/learn hanja. You can tell the words by context. The word “dubal” is not used as often so kids might not know. Writing that in hanja wont help.

My dad learned hanja as a child and his knowledge is so much broader and more in depth when reading Korean newspapers, watching news, and many other things. My dad gave my kids Korean names using hanja with their own special meaning. My kids loved it.
