A faction of hardline Communist Party and military officials, calling themselves the State Committee on the State of Emergency (GKChP), launched a coup d'état in Moscow. Their objective was definitive: to depose Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, halt his liberalization reforms, and preserve the centralized authority of the Soviet Union.The trajectory of modern history shifted dramatically on August 19, when Boris Yeltsin, then President of the Russian SFSR, defiantly climbed atop a T-72 tank outside the Russian parliament building. By publicly condemning the coup as unconstitutional and rallying thousands of civil dissidents to form human barricades, Yeltsin effectively neutralized the military's resolve to advance.The coup collapsed within three days due to widespread civil resistance and institutional defection. While President Gorbachev was released from house arrest, the political infrastructure of the USSR was irreparably fractured.
