@grahamdavid: Some people hate private landlords. Good news ... this proposal means you can have the Government as your Landlord, and the Council as your Agent. #GrahamDavid #Satire #Comment
The Government should be offering zero CGT to landlords if you sell to councils.

UK is cooked :
Cost of administering will be extortionate especially by inefficient public sector. More debt will impact borrowing rates on total Govt debt so also needs to be factored in.

I think that private landlords should buy the homes and rent them to their local council on and yr tenancy. ALL tenants have to rent through their local council only (no estate agents/rental agents). That way landlords make money and councils decide who lives where and everyone gets treated fairly.

It’s an interesting thought. If something like this ever happened, I suspect plenty of investors would happily sell to the Government if Capital Gains Tax relief was offered. My bigger concern would be whether councils could maintain a much larger housing stock. Judging by the condition of much of the existing council housing, there’s a real risk standards for tenants could decline rather than improve.

The challenge is the condition of some of those properties and where do people go when the are evicted from these properties for rent arrears or ASB . We need the flexibility of the PRS for lots of reasons.

Some merit in this but maintenance is likely to be more costly. They should also buy more off plan on new schemes giving the developers confidence to commence, the RPs should stick to maintenance md mngement rather than building

This is quite a measured idea, I've said for a while that councils should be buying back old council homes in order to replenish the stock.
