On 18 August, OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens, and anyone its system reads as under 18 is placed there automatically. The age guess itself has been rolling out since January. A stated birthday can be overruled. In the EU, it arrives in the coming weeks. OpenAI names five examples of what the guess reads: the topics you talk about, the times of day you use it, how the account is used, how long it has existed, and the age you claimed. The rest is not identified. The New York Times reports more than 2,000 signals; OpenAI calls them “minimally privacy invasive”. A wrong guess falls two ways, and only one announces itself. An adult read as a teen will notice, and has a way out: verification with Persona, a live selfie or government ID or both, deleted within 7 days. Verify once and the guessing stops. A minor read as an adult sees nothing change and is asked nothing; the published fix is written for people 18 or older. OpenAI says that when it is not confident, it defaults to the safer experience. A confident wrong guess is the case no default catches. OpenAI has never published how often the guess is wrong. One number got out: in March, The Wall Street Journal reported the system had at one point misclassified minors as adults about 12% of the time, against roughly 100 million under-18 users a week. OpenAI answered on the record: performance similar to the rest of the industry, never completely foolproof. The adult mode the Journal was covering still has not launched. The age guessing has. That 12% is five months old and measures one direction. It was never OpenAI's own disclosure. Today no error rate is published: not in the launch, the help pages, the safety evaluations, or the report OpenAI files in Europe. Sources: OpenAI, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times. #chatgpt #openai #ageverification #onlinesafety #aisafety
