“ I became a police officer because of Inspector Bediako.” That is exactly what one Ghana Police officer told legendary actor Oscar Nii Aa Provencal years after the famous television series first aired. For millions of Ghanaians, Inspector Bediako wasn’t just another TV character. He was intelligent, disciplined, fearless, and always one step ahead of criminals. At a time when Ghana had only a handful of locally produced television dramas, the series became must-watch weekend entertainment and left a lasting mark on an entire generation. The man behind the iconic detective was Oscar Nii Aa Provencal, one of Ghana’s most accomplished actors, directors, producers, and creative arts advocates. Born into the distinguished Provencal family of Osu, Accra, he is the son of the late H. S. T. Provencal, a lawyer, politician, and former Member of Parliament during Ghana’s First Republic. His father named him “Oscar” after Argentine heavyweight boxer Oscar Bonavena, while his Ga name, Nii Aa, identifies him as the second son in the family. Unlike many actors who dream of fame, Provencal has often explained that he entered acting because he simply loved storytelling. Recognition came later through years of hard work, discipline, and professionalism. Everything changed on 3 April 1993, when Inspector Bediako premiered on Ghana Television (GTV). The series quickly became one of Ghana’s most popular television dramas. Instead of relying on fists and gunfights, Inspector Bediako solved crimes through intelligence, careful investigations, forensic thinking, and respect for the law. That realistic approach made him one of the most admired fictional detectives in Ghanaian television history. The programme’s impact reached far beyond entertainment. During a visit to a police station for a film production, a female officer approached Oscar Provencal with an unforgettable confession: she had chosen a career in the Ghana Police Service because she grew up watching Inspector Bediako. For Provencal, it was proof that television has the power to shape lives and inspire future generations. Beyond Inspector Bediako, Oscar Provencal built an impressive career in film and television, appearing in productions such as Deadly Voyage, Bigman Wahala, Sun City, and The Other Side of the Rich. Decades after the original series became a classic, he returned to the role in the modern Inspector Bediako reboot on Akwaaba Magic, where he starred alongside Anthony Woode as his on-screen son. Away from the screen, Provencal has consistently championed Ghana’s creative industry. He has called for better funding, stronger professionalism, improved working conditions, and greater investment in local filmmaking. He has also used his voice to discuss national development, agriculture, food security, and opportunities for young creatives. In recent years, he celebrated another proud milestone when his daughter, Anne-Marie Provencal, was called to the Ghana Bar, describing it as one of the proudest moments of his life. More than 30 years after Inspector Bediako first appeared on Ghanaian television, Oscar Provencal remains one of Ghana’s greatest screen legends. His work entertained millions, inspired future police officers, and helped prove that Ghana could produce world-class television with unforgettable characters. Did you grow up watching Inspector Bediako? What is the one episode or scene you’ll never forget? Tell us in the comments. #OscarProvencal #InspectorBediako #GhanaHistory #Ghallywood #GTV
