The AAIDI has decided that Schluter trim is cheap. Let me show you what that "cheap" trim actually looks like in a finished bathroom renovation — and why the real conversation should be about safety, not status. There are four tile materials: ceramic, porcelain, glass, and natural stone. Only one of them — natural stone — can be legitimately mitered to a finished edge. The others become razor sharp when cut, and encouraging homeowners to put razor-sharp tile edges in the most slippery room in the house is not a design decision. It's a liability. This guest en suite was renovated to match an existing floor and shower using porcelain tile with a printed marble pattern. The mirror-on-mirror approach — a decorative framed mirror mounted against a full tile-to-ceiling wall mirror — required a clean transition between the tile field and the wall mirror. Schluter-JOLLY trim in brushed brass anodized aluminum was the right finish for the job. It coordinates with the brushed brass faucet hardware, provides a precise line of delineation at the tile edge, and completes the room. That is not cheap. That is correct. Schluter trim, quarter round, bullnose, and offcut stone from your countertop are all legitimate solutions to a real installation problem. So is selecting tile that comes with its own trim pieces. What is not a solution is telling people their bathroom looks cheap without giving them anything useful to do about it. Good advice belongs to everyone. Not just the people who can afford to tear out a bathroom and start over.
