That embargo left a gap in Pakistan’s air force modernization plans and pushed the country to look for self-reliant options. In response, Pakistan partnered with China to co-develop the JF-17 “Thunder”, a multi-role fighter jet built largely at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex in Kamra. The project focused on domestic assembly, avionics upgrades, and weapon integration, which helped Pakistan gain control over production, maintenance, and future modifications without depending on a single supplier.
