What if grammar is hard for me to learn? Many students find grammar to be overwhelming. One reason is that learners are often introduced to grammar structures before they have had enough exposure to people using those structures in a real-world context. Language develops gradually through meaningful input and repeated exposure. Before learners can comfortably use a new grammar structure, they need to hear it, read it, and encounter it in different contexts many times. This helps you notice patterns and begin to understand how the language works naturally. However, when teaching time is limited, (and it almost always is in our fast-paced society,) many schools and language programs rely heavily on explicit grammar instruction to help students make faster short-term progress. As a result, learners may be expected to study and memorize structures they haven’t had enough exposure to yet. For example learning all of the irregular past verbs without ever having heard someone use them in a vlog or conversation. It’s no surprise, then, that grammar can start to feel confusing or overwhelming. Explicit explanations certainly are useful, but they cannot replace the experience of interacting with the language over time. This is how we end up with students who spent years studying English in school but they only remember learning grammar. And now they don’t even feel confident using that grammar in conversation! Now that you’re an adult and have a bit more say in how you learn; you have the ability to change this. Instead of trying to master every grammar point as soon as it’s introduced, focus on building familiarity through listening, reading, and meaningful communication. As your exposure grows, many grammar patterns begin to make more sense because you’ve seen and heard them enough times for them to feel familiar and less abstract. Grammar usage will gradually become clearer as you exposure to the language grows. It’s necessary for speaking any language but the way we learn it can have varying results
