I hate to say it, but Avatar has never been something that has made a lot of money for Nickelodeon and Paramount. When the show first aired, Nickelodeon advertised it to young boys with the intent for them to make money through merchandise. However, the audience that ended up watching the show was much more general and skewed older, which meant that they were not making as much money off of it as they would like. Yes it was critically acclaimed, and had a very loyal fan base, and that is what saved the series multiple times from cancellation, but to media companies (especially right now) positive reviews, and ratings don’t guarantee success in their books. In their mind, an Avatar film will bring in. It’s pre-existing fan base, but there is no guarantee that it would create new fans, and given how risk-averse movie studios are right now, I can understand their logic in moving it out of theaters. I don’t agree with that logic, but that’s their attitude.
