One thing I’ve learned is that getting to know your kids is something that never stops. As they grow, they change. Their thoughts change, their interests change, and the way they see the world changes too. That’s why it’s so important to keep making time for the conversations that don’t seem like a big deal. Sometimes the best talks happen in the car, while making dinner, on a walk, or right before bed. They don’t always open up when we expect them to, but when they know we’re willing to listen without rushing them or trying to fix everything, they begin to share more. I’ve realized that asking how their day was isn’t always enough. Ask what made them laugh, what they’re excited about, what they’re thinking about, or what’s been on their mind lately. Those small questions often lead to the conversations you’ll remember most. At the end of the day, I don’t want my kids to feel like they only come to me when something is wrong. I want them to know they can come to me with the big things, the small things, the exciting moments, the confusing ones, and everything in between. Building that kind of trust doesn’t happen overnight—it’s built one conversation, one shared laugh, and one moment of truly listening at a time.
