Performance pressure combined with ADHD is not a free pass. Avoidance, ego and silence are not excuses. But it is data about what happens when pressure turns s//ggs into a task that collides with executive function barriers. In my clinical work over the past seven years, I can’t tell you how often what gets labeled as performance anxiety is only half the picture. The other half is initiation shutdown, attentional overload, nervous system threat, and fear of evaluation all of which are patterns that are common in ADHD and rarely named in s//ggsual conversations. Most interventions for performance pressure are genuinely helpful, but they often fail when they assume an executive function is functioning with no barriers.
If clinicians, partners, or individuals don’t understand the ADHD layer, the same tools keep getting applied while the same barriers remain activated. Over time, people can internalize this as a personal failing rather than recognizing it as a systems and access issue. Communication, repair and accountability all still matter greatly here. But it is incredibly hard (no pun intended) to communicate clearly when someone doesn’t feel empowered within their s//ggsuality and doesn’t understand why their brain keeps hitting the brakes. This isn’t about excusing behavior, it’s always about accurately identifying what’s happening so interventions can adapt, rather than repeatedly treating the wrong problem.
And none of this is one size fits all or fully generalizable. Every person, nervous system, relationship dynamic, history, and barrier profile are different. I work primarily with heteros//ggsual couples and individuals, so this lens is being shared in the context of the population I serve. This is educational, not universal, and not diagnostic, but when this lens fits, it can fundamentally change the conversation.
Also, I am not the typical professional in the room. I use jokes, bad language and honesty that can sting. If this type of content is not for you, that is also data. I am not everyone’s cup of tea (probably bc I hate tea and I’m a coffee kind of gal.. BOLD and energetic) ☕️😜 #adhd #men #relationships
