Go is an extremely complex game with infinitely more variations than chess and for years, computers have struggled to beat humans. However AlphaGo stunned the world when it started beating credible players and when it played Sedol, it won the first 3 matches in a best of five game, proving it was an almost unbeatable machine. However, in Game Four, Lee Sedol made a move that was widely considered to be one of the greatest moves in Go history, a move so unlikely even the most powerful AI in the world didn’t see it coming. Lee’s Move 78, also called “the divine move” was a 10,000 to 1 play that caught AlphaGo by surprise. The move caused AlphaGo to make several mistakes, which was highly unusual for an AI, ultimately giving Lee an edge that led to his victory. Although Lee ultimately lost the match, his single victory was a testament to human creativity, a robot created by an entire team with every possible advantage was defeated by one moment of chaos, the type of risk and unconventional thought process that only a human could possess. It’s also a reminder that humans instinctively will celebrate our own achievements and even if a computer can do something better than a human can, it will never carry the same weight.
