I can speak, but I cannot hear. That is why I use signs and this notebook to talk. I really am sorry for bumping into you. Lena stared at the words, then back into Miu’s eyes—and in that glance, she caught a flash of hurt before Miu looked away. For a second, Lena wanted to say, “I’m sorry too,” but behind her, her friends were calling her name. If she showed kindness now, her reputation would crumble. So she only nodded stiffly, turned on her heel, and walked away—but her chest felt tight and heavy, carrying the weight of what she’d done. Later that afternoon, when most students had gone home, Lena found herself wandering alone towards the quiet school garden. She felt restless; the memory of Miu’s face kept playing in her mind. There, under an old acacia tree, she spotted Miu sitting cross-legged on the grass, pouring small bits of food from a paper bag. A fluffy grey-and-white stray cat rubbed against her legs, purring softly. Lena walked closer, still trying to keep up her usual tough girl act. She stopped a few steps away and spoke in her usual sharp tone: “What are you doing here all alone? ” Miu looked up, surprised but calm. She smiled, understood what Lena said by reading her lips and expression, and raised her hands again, signing: “Hi there, I’m feeding this little cat. He comes here every day.” Lena blinked, completely lost. “I don’t understand what you’re moving your hands for. Speak properly—I know you’re deaf, not mute.” Miu didn’t take offence. She just chuckled softly—a clear, sweet sound—and picked up her notebook. She wrote quickly and held it out: > Sorry. This is how I talk too, but I know not everyone understands. This is Mr. Whiskers. He lives around here and is always hungry. Do you want to meet him? Lena read the words, and for the first time all day, her hard expression softened. Her shoulders relaxed, and guilt washed over her again—stronger this time. She knelt down slowly on the grass besides Miu, her voice quieter than before. “Miu… I really am sorry about this morning. I shouldn’t have laughed or spoken to you that way.” But Miu couldn’t hear a single word. She only saw Lena’s lips move and the sad, regretful look in her eyes. She tilted her head curiously. Lena realised it and pointed gently at the notebook and pen resting besides Miu, then tapped her own chest—asking permission to write. Miu nodded warmly and handed them over. Lena wrote slowly and carefully: > I am so sorry for how I acted earlier. It was rude and mean. I judged you without knowing anything, and I hurt you. I feel terrible about it. @yoursafe_haven: Miu was a bright, deft girl with soft eyes and a gentle smile. Though she could not hear any sound, she spoke clearly and carried a small leather notebook and a fine pen everywhere she went. She also used sign language fluently — it was her way of sharing thoughts when words weren’t enough. One busy morning at school, Miu was walking down the hallway, focused on getting to her next class, when someone rounded the corner fast and bumped hard into her. Her books slipped from her arms, scattering across the floor. It was Lena—the girl everyone knew as the school’s “tough one". She was always in trouble, walked with sharp confidence, and never let anyone see her being soft. Instead of offering help or an apology, Lena crossed her arms and gave Miu an annoyed, cold look. “Watch where you’re going,” she snapped. Miu didn’t hear the words, but she read the expression on Lena’s face clearly. She smiled gently, knelt to pick up her things, and raised her hands to sign slowly: “I am sorry. I wasn’t looking ahead properly.” Lena frowned, tilting her head in confusion. “What are you doing? Are you mute or something? She let out a short, unkind laugh. “Can’t you speak? ” Miu’s smile faded just a little, but she stayed calm. She quickly opened her notebook and wrote neatly, then turned it around for Lena to read: > I can speak, but I cannot hear. That is why I use signs and this notebook to talk. I really am sorry for bumping into you. Lena stared at the words, then back into Miu’s eyes—and in that glance, she caught a flash of hurt before Miu looked away. 3️⃣ Lena reached into the bag of cat food, took a small handful, and placed it on the blank page of the notebook. She wrote next to it: >Then let me do something to make it right. Can I help feed Mr. Whiskers with you? From now on, whenever I can, I want to be here too. Miu read it, and her face lit up with a bright, relieved smile—the prettiest smile Lena had ever seen. Miu nodded eagerly, clapped her hands gently, and patted the empty spot of grass right next to her. As the sun began to set, painting the sky in soft hues of gold, pink, and lavender, the two girls sat side by side. They spoke in their own special way: Lena using words and writing and Miu using speech, signs, and ink. Between them, Mr Whiskers ate happily, occasionally curling up against their legs.

1️⃣ Miu read it slowly, then looked up at Lena with kind eyes. She smiled and signed: “It’s alright, truly. I’m used to it.” When she saw Lena’s confused look again, she took the pen back and added below Lena’s words: > Please don’t worry. Many people react the same way at first — they get confused, or stare, or say things without thinking. You are not the first, and you won’t be the last. It does not hurt as much anymore.

4️⃣ There were no loud sounds, but there was understanding. There was no judgement, only forgiveness. And as the light faded, a new, quiet friendship began to grow—one built not on what could be heard, but on what could be felt in the heart. She speaks with her hands; I listen with my heart. Love doesn’t need sound to be real, just someone willing to understand. The End.

2️⃣ Lena’s heart sank. She thought of her own past—how she herself had been bullied and mocked once and how she’d decided that the only way to protect herself was to put up a hard wall, to act like nothing and no one could touch her. She’d started pushing others away just to feel strong and in control, but looking at Miu—someone who faced far more challenges, yet still smiled, still cared for a lonely cat, and still chose kindness even after being hurt—Lena realised she had targeted the wrong person. Miu was the kind of soul that deserved protection, not mockery.
