Three weeks ago I suddenly lost hearing in my left ear. The same week I performed on the GMAs. It’s called SSNHL (Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss), and here’s what I wish I’d known: 1. You have 72 hours. The first 72 hours after onset give you the best chance at recovery. Get to an ENT and get a hearing test (audiogram) immediately. Don’t wait to see if it improves on its own. And don’t let the Dr tell you it’s nothing without a hearing test. That happened to me. But thank God i went to get a second opinion the next day. Even past 72 hours, treatment can still help, so don’t assume it’s too late either. 2. Steroids are the first-line treatment. Oral steroids, and sometimes intratympanic (in-ear) injections. I started oral and moved to IV after I regressed. I’m 3 IT shots in… no improvement so far.. but still holding on to hope. People do also spontaneously recover. 3. Healing isn’t linear. I’m three weeks in and still don’t have an answer. But I’m still showing up for every appointment, every treatment. If something feels off with your hearing: sudden loss, fullness, ringing, or hearing pitch differently between your ears (diplacusis) DO NOT wait, and don’t accept the first “let’s just watch it” answer if your gut says otherwise. Advocate for yourself. Push for the test. Get a second opinion if you need one. Most cases have no identifiable cause. And many go misdiagnosed. Which is why I’m passionate about sharing this journey. I really hope this can reach someone before it’s too late. I’ll keep sharing updates as I have them. Hope this can help someone who needs it.
