Why did Jesus curse a fig tree for not having fruit if it wasn't even in season? The answer exposed the entire religious establishment of Jerusalem. In this eye-opening scene from Season 5, Episode 5 of The Chosen, Jesus walks with His disciples along the road to Jerusalem and unpacks the real reason He withered the barren fig tree (Matthew 21:18–22). While the disciples initially thought it was an unusual show of power, Jesus points out a vital agricultural truth: the presence of full leaves promised fruit, yet the branches were completely empty. When John realizes the tree represents the Jerusalem Temple, Jesus reveals His divine mission: "I'm here to tear down what isn't bearing fruit. And the time for that is now." For centuries, believers have wrestled with the story of the barren fig tree. Why would Jesus curse a tree when Mark’s Gospel explicitly states that it wasn't the season for figs? As Jesus explains so brilliantly here, the issue wasn't the season it was the deception. A fig tree in full leaf sends a signal to every hungry traveler that fruit has begun to grow. The tree put on a show of vitality, but had nothing of substance to offer. This living parable was aimed directly at the religious leaders and the bustling marketplace in the Temple courts. They had the ornate buildings, the robes, the animal sacrifices, and the political power plenty of "leaves" yet when God Himself walked into their courts looking for genuine worship, justice, and compassion, He found empty branches. This confrontation holds up a mirror to our own lives: Are we satisfied with looking spiritual on Sunday mornings while harboring bitterness, pride, and compromise throughout the week? Does our faith produce genuine love, patience, and humility, or is it just an attractive canopy of religious words? Jesus doesn't inspect our leaves; He looks for fruit. Allow the Lord to prune away religious pretension today so your life can bear fruit that lasts for eternity. What is one "leaf" of outward religion you want to exchange for authentic spiritual fruit in your walk with God? Share your reflections in the comments below! Don't forget to Subscribe, like, and share this video with someone studying the Gospels. #TheChosen #Matthew21 #BarrenFigTree #TheTemple #FruitfulFaith
