@thebluegrassfamily: If I was building my pantry from scratch- here’s what I’d start with. 10 simple items that I could build around. Flour- turns into biscuits, gravy, pancakes, pie crust and bread. Salt- simple, but good seasoning makes all the difference. Baking powder- it’s what gives biscuits, pancakes and muffins their rise. Baking soda- works alongside baking powder in so many recipes. Cornmeal- a staple in my kitchen- cornbread, fritters, breading- you’ll use it more than you think! Cooking fat- every good kitchen needs a dependable cooking fat! Sugar- not just for desserts, it balances recipes and is essential for baking. Rice- stretches meals, pairs with almost anything and stores well. Dry beans- they’re affordable, filling, and can feed a family for very little money. Oats- they make breakfast, cookies, granola, and even help stretch meatloaf and other recipes. People often think you need a pantry packed with specialty ingredients to cook from scratch. The truth is, a simple pantry like this has fed families for generations. Once you’ve got these basics, you can build from there. What pantry item would you add to this list?
