In 1812, as Napoleon's Grande Armée advanced deep into Russia, Russian forces under Kutuzov avoided decisive battle and instead retreated while destroying crops, supplies, and towns to deny the French any resources, a scorched earth strategy. When Napoleon reached Moscow that September, the city's governor had it evacuated and largely burned, so the French occupied a smoldering, empty capital rather than the prize they expected. Trapped without adequate supplies as winter approached, Napoleon was forced into a catastrophic retreat through the very territory his army had already stripped bare, and disease, starvation, and Russian harassment destroyed most of his forces. The episode remains a classic example of how sacrificing territory and infrastructure can defeat a materially superior invading army.
