As an event bartender, having worked hundreds of open bar weddings including a cocktail hour, I’d go one step further and say that if you do food, don’t skimp. If you do passed apps or a grazing table or even just bowls of popcorn, nuts and snack mix, don’t think you can get by with enough for 40 people when you know you have 75+ people. I don’t care if you go to Sam’s and get a box of 50 individual chip bags. You better get 2-3 boxes. A minimum of 1:1 ratio.

I’m in New Jersey and here cocktail is THE main event. We go all out for cocktail hour. Multiple passed hors d'oeuvres, carving station options, multiple manned chefs stations. And of course open bar with premium liquor. And then still serve a plated dinner after

My sister had Brie and raspberry jam egg roll thingies. And penne vodka and mini meatballs and I don’t even remember what else bc I was obsessed with the Brie and jam thingies.

Damn NJ must do weddings differently. Cocktail hour is just dinner #1. Then there is dinner #2. And then at the end of the reception after dessert is dinner #3

And if you’re the wedding party, make sure their snacks wherever you’re going to be staging because you’re not getting to eat at all that day, but you are expected to drink🤣

My nephew just got married with a fabulous happy hour – great endless cocktails, and wonderful passed appetizers- shrimp, cocktail, egg rolls, mini chicken, and waffles, even tortillas, salsa, cups, and veggie dumplings . We had the best time, I could’ve totally forgone the dinner. 😂

We had SO many snacks at our wedding. We have leftover snacks! BUT everyone said that they were so pleased with how many options there were for snacks. We had a lot of people with dietary restrictions and we were not letting anyone leave hungry.

I went to a wedding once and they had food after the wedding at the hotel, then appetizers before dinner, then dinner, then treats after dinner. Hubby's friend kept asking if we'd had enough to eat. LOL!

In NY/NJ our cocktail hours are a big deal. Tons of food with the rule almost being that you are full before dinner. Pass appetizers, cold and hot platters; chafing dishes, different stations - pasta, Asian, sushi, raw seafood bar, carvings..etc. So you are definitely EATING while drinking.

I went to a wedding with no food for cocktail hr. McDonald’s was 5mins down the rd grabbed some cheeseburgers and ate in the car noticed a lot of other people doing the same happy I did bc they were heavy handed with the liquor lol
