My first wedding was ren fest themed. Almost no one came in costume, even though we encouraged it. I was overjoyed when my aunt and uncle and their two adult sons with their wives walked in in full gear. One even went full viking with a horned helmet and everything. Made my day. 🥰

Okay, fun story: my mom was a pianist/organist and did a lot of weddings. When I was in college (early 90s) she asked me to come help her out with a wedding gig at our church because she needed me to help her turn pages and also play the chimes for one song while she was at the organ. I knew the bride but not the groom; when I met him I complimented his bow tie and cummerbund that had subtle Mickey Mouse pattern. Little did the bride know that the groom had arranged with my mom to change the recessional after the ceremony; instead of the traditional one he asked her to play Zip a Dee Doo Dah! He did a little heel-click jump as they walked down the aisle and it was so sweet. Still one of my favorite memories of my mom, that she would agree to play that at the groom’s request in our very formal Presbyterian church. Humans’ capacity for whimsy never ceases to delight me.
