This is very worrying. This needs to be addressed urgently. We cannot have foreign professors exceeding South African professors.

The Chairperson of the portfolio committee of higher education is not telling more about the fund he says was meant to grow the researcher. Can the Chair share the number of researchers who were supported by the fund and their levels of research outputs (i.e., publications, patents, products, postgraduate students supervised, etc.). The committee must go through the statistics before tilting towards "scapegoating".

The reason is that when a South African academic attains a Doctoral degree they prefer joining the Corporate & Government where they earn more higher salaries where as foreign academics are restricted into corporate or government. This therefore means that the foreign academic has no other option but focus on research ultimately earning Professorship title. To be a professor it calls for sustained research output over several years while employed by a university. So, I recommend that salaries and conditions of service should be improved to attract local academics remain in academia.... otherwise as long as govt & corporate continue attracting SA with Doctoral degree, Foreigners, professors will continue out numbering South Africans. My thoughts

academia isnt about nationality, its all about academic research and impact. for instance say you have choose between a random south african mathematician or Terence Tao, any reasonable person would pick Terence Tao.
