@kporter.stuff: An engineering drawing communicates everything a manufacturer needs to produce a part correctly, and every ambiguity in it eventually becomes a wrong part. Start with the title block: revision, general tolerance, material. Read the views before the dimensions to build a mental model of the geometry. Follow the critical dimensions to their tolerances. Read the notes last. After 30 years leading engineering teams, the engineers who could read a print fluently had a significant advantage in every conversation with manufacturing. It’s a learnable skill and one of the highest-return investments in the first year of an engineering career. 🙌🏼⚙️
Important to dimension accordingly to how the machinist will program and then QC will check the part. Should never have dangling dims and if possible use a common starting reference point.

Our tolerances are so tight on some drawings that they aren't manufacturable.

Understanding GD&T and ISO standards that drive drawing standards are critical to master. A mechanical engineer’s drawing is signed by a lot of contributors but it’s the ME that uses his initials to approve the release of the drawing in the upper right corner. The drawing must be perfect. Drawing ECNs cost $3K each to process, so mistakes are not acceptable.

Couldn't agree more. The better you understand engineering drawings, the smoother the transition from design to manufacturing. Clear communication on paper saves a lot of time and rework on the shop floor.

Good drawings are decrease Craft error rates and, most importantly, enable early identification of safety risks. Drawings are the foundation for procedures and work instructions.

yes the hard way is correct. the usual overlook in our shop is knowing when 307 is acceptable and 325 is required..you know what these numbers mean..im sure

Ohhh yes that lucid, you make me remember my days at college, engineering drawing was giving me a headache till I mastered it. Without drawing engineers are prone of making mistakes when designing objects.

It’s a lost skill as we move into computer models. I’ve always said if you can’t draw it and define by hand, you can’t on the computer

Your focus is on manufacturing, but speaking as a drafting coordinator from the energy sector, don't forget to collaborate closely with your drafters/designers.

Heres what you look for ….. an engineer that has served his/her time on the floor as a toolmaker / fitter machinist who has experience then and only then your drawings made by these people will be correct (first time) No Mistakes ….!

Except when the engineers use dimensions and tolerances they don't understand; don't know the function it serves and don't even know how to properly draw it. Classic automotive
