More than likely you’ve grown up in an environment where ur the one who knows everything about animals. But then you work with animal people and realize you don’t know anything lol

Do not forget that working with animals still involves working with people.

It is a blue collar job without blue collar pay or benefits!! Your body will eventually hold you back, I’m a young adult and still feel sore at the end of the day with years of backpacking, lifting, hiking, boating etc experience

The animals will never be what drains you. The animals will never be what makes you second guess if this is the right path for you.

Get as many certifications and licenses as possible! Even if a certification seems silly it can show competence and skill. Stuff like scuba is well known, but drone license, first aid, etc. also are valued in growing fields!

Don't get into the any of these fields unless it's a true passion. It's very rewarding but also very stressful, long days. shitty pay and heartache. I love it but you can burn out quick if it's not something you truly love.

VetMed. Make sure you have a minor in business management. And that you have a therapist, a life OUTSIDE of work. Do not let the job be your whole life. Empathy Burnout is very real.

the experience of volunteering or interning at a zoo, aquarium, or sanctuary is incredibly insightful for your future and should not be discounted. zoos and aquariums are a great place to get to see and experience various facets of marine sciences like educational outreach, research, conservation, and advocacy.

Don’t give up. Don’t lose hope. It’s easy to get caught in the negativity of things but I hold the quote from Lorax close to me "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

Expect people not to care about your work or your passion for it. Most won’t understand why you’re working so hard towards what they consider “insignificant accomplishments.”

A lot of us know that quote that says “fieldwork is donating your body to science while you are still alive” is no exaggeration. But once you know it’s your passion, the path becomes set. There is so much work to do, please join us, the world’s ecosystems need you!

Volunteer as much as you can to grow connections with different people and find what you’re most interested in. Networking is a key skill to have for that type of career. Signed: student marine scientist (4 months until graduation)

You can’t expect any type of recognition, or to ever be paid what you deserve. If you choose to do it, you’re choosing it because you genuinely love animals more than anything else in this world and helping them feels like a part of your soul.

Don’t do it unless you plan on moving to very specific areas away from people you love for a job for very little money

You’re not doing it for money, do it for passion.. always keep an open mind and keep learning. I always tell my self, in this field it never will get boring because there’s something new learned all the time.

Remember that empathy is a blessing but also can lead to burn out in a world that doesn't seem to care. You need to take care of yourself and remind yourself that you are making the world a bit brighter, even if by a little bit at a time.

it is NOT a glamorous job. most animals stink and you WILL get covered in all sorts of nasty stuff. dont go into it thinking its all posing for cute pictures and cuddling baby animals like the Internet would have you believe! I find it to be incredibly rewarding work but most of it is back breaking and smells horrible lol
