EXPLAINING WHY SHINJI'S "EARTH" IS PURPLE In alchemy, Asuka represents the Sun, which symbolizes the conscious ego and corresponds to gold, the incorruptible metal that stands above all others. This is, essentially, a perfect description of Asuka's personality. Rei represents the Moon, which symbolizes the feminine principle, the unconscious, reflection, and intuition. Shinji, however, is the opposite of what the Earth traditionally represents. In alchemy, the Earth symbolizes stability and firmness. That's why the Earth's color is different: ironically, it reflects the fact that Shinji is the center of everything, yet still fails to fulfill his destiny. Meanwhile, Misato represents Jupiter, which symbolizes legitimate authority, prosperity, and moderation. Just as Jupiter protects the Earth, Misato protects Shinji throughout the story. What further reinforces this entire alchemical symbolism is that these symbols all appear during the Instrumentality sequence. Then, immediately after Instrumentality ends, Yui ikari monologue: "As long as the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth exist, it will all work out."
