@1990somethingcountry: An unknown Texas honky-tonk singer put out his very first album — and shattered a record that had stood for 40 years. 🤠 Clint Black grew up in Katy, Texas, playing bars before he was even 20. In 1988, producer James Stroud heard his demo and got him signed to RCA Nashville. Then, in May 1989, his debut album "Killin' Time" dropped — and country radio caught fire. The first single, "A Better Man," hit No. 1 in June 1989. Then the title track "Killin' Time" hit No. 1. Then "Nobody's Home." Then, in 1990, "Walking Away." Four singles. Four straight No. 1s. From a debut album. That kind of launch just didn't happen. "Killin' Time" stayed on the Billboard country albums chart for over 80 weeks, sold more than 3 million copies, and earned Black the CMA Horizon Award as the year's best new act. One first record rewrote what a country debut could even look like.
