![What is ʿIbādah? Today, we reduce it to rituals — prayer, fasting, zakāh, ḥajj. But at its root, ʿIbādah comes from ʿabd — slave. A slave belongs entirely to his master: his time, his body, his will, even his space. There are no off-hours, no conditions, no limits. That’s what absolute obedience means. But here’s the key: obedience alone is not worship. True ʿIbādah is obedience joined with intense love for Allah. Just as the body without a soul is lifeless, obedience without love is empty. Allah says: وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَتَّخِذُ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ أَندَادًا يُحِبُّونَهُمْ كَحُبِّ اللَّهِ ۖ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَشَدُّ حُبًّا لِّلَّهِ “And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.” — [Surah al-Baqarah 2:165] Imam Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: “Worship unites two principles: the extremity of love with the extremity of humility and submissiveness. So whoever you loved but were not submissive to, you are not a worshipper of him, and whoever were submissive to without showing love, you are not a worshipper of him until you are both loving and submissive.](/video/cover/7546525894794415381.webp)
