@pow.magazine: Jimi Hendrix’s performing the Star-Spangled Banner at Woodstock (1969) - After being delayed nearly 10 hours, Jimi played to a crowd shrunk from 400,000 to 30,000 backed by his one-off band Gypsy Sun & Rainbows. On his Fender Strat he emulated the sounds of machine gun fire, falling bombs, and napalm into a take on the anthem that captured the chaos of the Vietnam era. Writer Charles Shaar Murray called it arguably the most powerful work of art about the Vietnam War. Hendrix himself told Dick Cavett weeks later that he played it simply because he was American and had sung it in school.
I mean, Jimi was such a badass. Hard to wrap your head around and, by all accounts, just the nicest and most humble guy ud ever want to meet. Fanatic since I was 9 in 1976 when I happened to hear his version of Johnny b Goode in n my dad’s alarm clock radio. Never has there been anyone cooler than Jimi Hendrix
