Before the 1838 Battle of Blood River, the Voortrekkers (led by Andries Pretorius) made a sacred covenant or vow to God, led by spiritual leader Sarel Cilliers. They promised that if God delivered them from the overwhelming Zulu forces, they would build a church in His honor and commemorate the day annually as a Sabbath. The Exact Vow The exact promise made to God, as recorded in historical documents and recited daily leading up to the battle, was as follows:"My brothers and children, we are standing today before a holy God to make a vow to Him.
