Today is Independence Day in the US; fireworks ought to be lighting up the sky, and the aroma of barbecue should be wafting through the streets. Yet, all of this lies across an ocean. I sit here—no flag in hand, no cheering crowds around me—with nothing but the constantly refreshing images of celebration on my phone screen, like phantoms from another world. I truly loved that land—loved it so deeply that I believed it was home. Its light once shone upon my late nights of overtime, upon my children’s smiling faces, and upon everything I had so carefully built. It was only then that I realized love could be so sharp—like a razor—cutting a person right out of their own life.❤️❤️❤️
