The sport was originally called "association football," which was quickly shortened to "soccer" as slang. The term was invented in England in the late 19th century by wealthy university students who took the "soc" from "association" and added "-er" to differentiate it from "rugby" (which was nicknamed "rugger") We could start calling it sockyfutbol 🤷🏻♀️

i have a question since i know you are good with language dialects: can you explain why certain accents in the Deep South say "detailing" like "de-telling"? I didn't notice it until a friend pointed it out, and now I can't stop noticing that some southerners pronounce it normally and others pronounce it as "de-telling" or even "di-telling". i didn't know if maybe you had some sorta linguistic fun fact for me lolll

we arent even the only Country that calls it Soccer, obviously Canada does as well since it's part of the same Cultural block, but a number of Countries in Asia also call it Soccer or an approximation

Any sport called football is called that originally to differentiate it from a sport played on horseback. Every English speaking country calls their most popular football sport “football” and that just happens to be soccer for a lot of them. In America/Canada it’s gridiron football, in Australia it’s Australian football, in Ireland it’s Gaelic football, in South Africa it’s rugby…
