It’s been hot around here, so it seemed like a good time to post this! Breastfed babies don’t need extra water. If you’re worried about hydration, the best thing to do is simply nurse them a little more often. Breast milk is approximately 87% water, which is more than enough to meet your baby’s hydration needs, even in hot climates where a baby has unrestricted access to breast milk. In fact, before about 6 months of age, giving additional water can be dangerous because it can dilute a baby’s electrolytes and, in rare cases, lead to water intoxication. Once babies start solids around 6 months, it’s perfectly fine to offer small sips of water with meals. But if they’re breastfeeding well, breast milk is still doing the heavy lifting when it comes to hydration. We were outside at my older sons’ football game recently, and it was toasty. On the walk back to the car, my baby suddenly flipped himself over and started acting absolutely famished. He probably was thirsty!
