Research matters. This video is not a proven claim; it is how a research question changed how I think about my life. For a research methods class, I reviewed studies and wrote a proposal asking whether camouflaging and suicidal ideation might be positively correlated. I did not run the study. The graph was predicted—not observed—data. Correction: I say “double” in the video, but Kirby et al. found that during 2013–2017 the risk of suicide death was over 3x higher for autistic females than non-autistic females; the male comparison was not statistically significant. The study did not test masking as the cause. Other studies have reported associations between camouflaging and suicidality. Association is not causation. This does not prove that masking causes suicide or that unmasking prevents it. My proposed sample excluded people with intellectual disabilities, so it could not represent the full community. What I know is that masking has been intensely stressful for me. I love my life, and unmasking helps me build it around accommodations, honest relationships, and being known as autistic. That is Annika-based—not advice or a rule for you. Masking may be protective or necessary, and not everyone can safely unmask. Research:
• Hull et al. (2017), Putting on My Best Normal
• Hull et al. (2020), Gender Differences in Camouflaging
• Kirby et al. (2019), A 20-Year Study of Suicide Death
• Higgins et al. (2021), Defining Autistic Burnout
• Cassidy et al. (2018), Risk Markers for Suicidality
Full citations + DOIs pinned. CW: suicide. U.S.: call/text 988 for immediate support. Context note: This is Annika-first content—a window into one autistic and ADHD life, not a definition of autism or ADHD. I am white, relatively low support needs, and not physically disabled. My perspective is not universal, and what works for me may not work for you. Please take what resonates and make room for experiences different from mine. #annikaunmasked #autism #unmasking #autisminwomen #audhd
