You’re right. You can also do a rough tyrolean finish to the surface of the column before blockwork & mesh

Avoid using steel mesh across the junction between a reinforced concrete column and a block wall. Over time, any moisture ingress can cause the steel mesh to corrode, which may eventually lead to staining, debonding, or additional cracking. A better approach is to use alkali-resistant fibre mesh to reinforce the plaster over the joint. More importantly, don’t rely on the plaster alone. During blockwork, drill into the concrete column and install dowel bars tying the block wall back to the column at approximately every four block courses. This creates a positive mechanical connection, helps control differential movement, and significantly reduces the likelihood of cracks developing along the column-to-wall interface. Cracks at these junctions are often preventable when the wall is properly tied to the structural frame and the correct reinforcement details are used from the outset.
