The whole working life of a hive is done by females. Now read how the Qur'an speaks to the bee: "And your Lord inspired to the bee, 'Take for yourself among the mountains, houses… then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord.'" (Qur'an 16:68-69) In Arabic, every command there — take, eat, follow — is feminine. "Your Lord" in the verse is feminine too. The whole address is spoken to a female. It's not that the Qur'an announced a fact nobody knew — beekeepers have long known the workers are female. It's that the grammar of the verse and the biology of the hive agree, down to the ending of every verb. And the verse ends: "Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought." (16:69) That much order — a female workforce, a built structure, a coloured, healing food — inspired into an insect that has no idea it's following instructions.
