I’ve had to advocate for myself medically for over 9 years now and let me tell you it’s been a struggle. Out of all the doctors and specialist I’ve seen only one nurse practitioner has made me feel comfortable and informed me on exactly what I was dealing with. She was patient, kind, listened to my questions and concerns, and didn’t rush me. I think for me doctors sure do need more empathy and to actually read charts before going into a patients room. As for the medical terms she explains them in a way that I can understand by using photos and diagrams. I’m a visual learner and she picked up on that very quickly. So maybe also different methods of educating the patients of their diagnosis

i feel similarly as a nurse, i went to a post op appointment for my thyroid cancer recently and brought a family member with me & they asked me after “is what he said what you want to do? you didn’t say anything” afraid that he wasn’t taking the time to listen to me. then i had to explain that i just understood what he was telling me and that i agree with him and just didn’t have any questions at that time because of it. i catch myself doing it sometimes and have to slow myself down because i remember how it was before i was a nurse.

I have rheumatoid arthritis & our insurance offers a patient advocate for me. I’m so grateful for them because going through a specialty pharmacy for my biologic medication is so confusing. It goes through so many different levels and I think everyone deserves to have one when it comes to navigating through.

I am very thankful that I have a team that are patient. I use chat GPT to help fill in the gaps of knowledge and guide my own research. And it helps me create thoughtful questions so I don’t waste their time or mine. I recently got diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and I’m still trying to sort out what is “normal” and what is in addition to. At first they rolled their eyes, but after having several meaningful conversations they realize I come to understand; not argue. But it’s tough.

My mom isn’t a doctor but she’s a nurse practitioner and having her around so I can ask about medical things is so helpful because some of the terminology is so confusing

I think Drs who take their time with patients is what helps a lot. It helps people feel like you care about them and it helps them relax more. Which in turn helps them comprehend easier. That’s how I see it.💖 Thanks for asking for our opinions and ideas.

I went from being a pharmacy technician to the patient and it has helped me tremendously. I am respected by doctors as well by having health literacy and knowledge of medication I research all of illnesses as well. I wonder how these doctors treat patients that have zero idea. It becomes overwhelming in these appointments.
