if you listen to the official podcast, Mike Schur said he based this part of their relationship (where he forgets her and starts dating Simone again in The Good Place) on that of Sandra Day O'Connor and her husband John. He developed dementia, she left her career at the Supreme Court to take care of him. he fell in love with another woman at the facility he was at. they began a relationship. Sandra was supportive of it. when asked why years later, she said "That was the happiest I had seen him in years. I loved him. I wanted him to be happy." you know, just in case you wanted this scene to make you cry MORE 😭😭😭
