In 1937, the Soviet government forcibly deported hundreds of thousands of Koreans living in the Russian Far East to Kazakhstan and other parts of Central Asia. This was an extremely difficult and tragic period for the Korean people. They traveled for weeks in crowded freight trains, and many lost their lives during the journey due to hunger, cold, and disease. When they arrived in Kazakhstan, many had no homes, no food, and no livestock. Although the Kazakh people themselves were living under very difficult conditions, they extended a helping hand to the Koreans. They welcomed them into their homes, shared their food and clothing, and helped them farm the land and adapt to their new environment. Many Koreans later recalled that they were able to survive thanks to the kindness and generosity of the Kazakh people. For this reason, many Koreans still hold deep respect and gratitude toward the Kazakh nation today. This story remains a historical example of friendship, compassion, and humanity between the Kazakh and Korean peoples during one of the most difficult periods in their history.
