@ponderingthepast: In honor of America’s 250th birthday, I figured I’d post the live reveal of one of the greatest moments and finds of my metal detecting career. This is a George Washington Inaugural button. These were given out by vendors during George Washington’s campaign in 1789. These are similar to today’s campaign pins and buttons that are given out at political events! For those of you that don’t know, this is an exceptional find and one of the most sought after pieces of early Americana one can find under their search coil. This particular button has a large “GW” monogram embossed in the center, with the message “Long Live the President” half encircling the top portion of the button. I dug this with my friend Sam at a new site we discovered several years ago, and this is actually his footage he got! After I started freaking out, Sam knew right away to hit that record button! It was found at the site of a late-18th century homestead, but recently replaced by a modern farm. It’s mind blowing to hold such an important piece of early Americana in my hands from our founding days. Happy Independence Day! #metaldetecting #america250 #georgewashington #button #innaugural
