@o_g_deez: I will say that I LOVE farmers marketsbut with a discerning eye when it comes to produce. Individual stands, not the market as a whole is what I’m referring to. There’s nothing wrong with conventional produce, but selling at a premium price while under the guise of “organic” is misleading. #farmersmarket #scam #foodietiktok #food #restaurant

Sysco owns less than 20% of the restaurant supply market. even so, they deliver ingredients. not just pre-made food. it's like saying your friend just cooked you dinner from what they bought from Publix.

As a Door Dasher I once had an order to pickup and deliver grocery store rotisserie chickens to a local “wood fired grill” restaurant 😏

In CALIFORNIA it’s ILLEGAL to sell what you don’t grow at the farmers market. In MISSOURI it’s rampant

Wendy’s? Sysco. Panera? Sysco. Olive garden? Also Sysco. And if it isn’t Sysco, it’s US Foods. And if not those two, it’s Restaurant Depot.

I used to deliver for SYSCO and the farmers market would buy pallet loads of frozen pies to repackage and sell between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Also all of the cheesecake factory cakes are delivered premade and frozen.

I've previously worked for Sysco and Reinhart (now PFG in Pennsylvania) for a combined 20 years. IDK about the produce, but if you see "Home Baked Pies" on a menu, they're probably buying it premade and frozen from a distributor and baking it in the oven in their kitchen...hence "home baked."

That's what I thought because the big farmer's market on my area carry the same brands as the grocery stores.

Please come visit the Smithfield Farmer’s market! We actually have rules about what can be sold and where it comes from.

Yup. Farmer’s Market was selling tomatoes for $7.50 a pound and oops they forgot to remove the same sticker from the grocery store down the street.

I work so hard to be pesticide free. If you follow my TikTok you can watch me picking bugs. Our produce has imperfections from the bugs. People can see our fields from the farmstand. There are so many good farmers. Find one in your state.

I am a small farmer and I always make sure to let my customers know they can come visit my farm. Everything on my table is grown down the street from them!

The farmers market aren’t even hiding it very well! I saw a couple of vendors selling broccoli & cauliflower that wasn’t even in season yet. Then I noticed they had the store vegetable boxes behind their tables!

This isn’t shocking at all. Especially when referring to chain restaurants. Chili’s, Applebees, Fridays, fast food restaurants. Half of them cook the food in microwaves I didn’t know people weren’t aware. Maybe the farm stands is new but not the rest.

I really appreciate this because people don’t know. I used to be a caterer and i couldn’t believe how many restaurant items you could buy frozen. Eating out can be such a waste!

Guessing you’ve never worked in a restaurant… what you’re saying is true for mid to low quality restaurants…. High end, make everything from scratch… that was my job for years.

I would hate to see anyone avoid farmers markets because of this post. Over the years I’ve been involved with efforts to support local growers, and I’ve met many of them. I have never seen anything I suspect was bought elsewhere for resale at our local farmers market, which also features many varieties of produce you cannot buy anywhere else. One grower has dozens of types of tomatoes and many types of hot peppers, too. In the fall, the apples are so fragrant you can smell them as walk down the aisle. Blueberry season has just started; Michigan, where I live, is one of the top 3 🫐 producers in the country. Here are some shots I’ve taken at Ann Arbor Farmers Market.
